Nyiyaparli Cultural Centre

Reawakening identity through design, language, and shared knowledge.

The Nyiyaparli Cultural Centre is a transformative project on Nyiyaparli Country in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. Decades of mining have disrupted stories, language, and community life, leaving artefacts stored in containers far from their rightful place. This centre represents a profound step toward restoring cultural identity and empowering future generations. It will serve as a meeting place, a cultural anchor, and a hub for education, health, and community services.

Nguluway DesignInc is leading the design concept phase in collaboration with Greenaway Architects and Mantirri Design. Our role includes Connecting with Country engagement and concept design, ensuring the architecture reflects Nyiyaparli heritage and responds to the Pilbara’s striking landscape. Every design move is guided by respect for cultural protocols and a commitment to community aspirations.

Designing for Reconnection

The centre will feature classrooms overlooking sacred mountain ranges, language teaching spaces, and museum-grade displays for artefacts returned to Country. Materiality draws from the red earth, blue skies, and soft green vegetation of the Pilbara, creating a built form that belongs to its place.

Preserving Language

With only six Elders fluent in the Nyiyaparli language, the centre will provide spaces for learning and cultural exchange. It will also deliver essential community services, including medical facilities and housing, supporting wellbeing alongside cultural renewal.

A Legacy of Healing

Beyond architecture, the project is about healing and unity. It navigates complex cultural dynamics while honouring Nyiyaparli as Traditional Custodians. Through collaboration and deep listening, the centre will become a living legacy: a place where stories return, voices are strengthened, and culture thrives.
