VIVID Ideas 2023

As part of the VIVID Ideas 2023 program, Nguluway DesignInc Director Craig Kerslake spoke as part of a panel about ‘(Human) Nature and the City’.

Keynote speaker, Mark McClelland, presented a theory of place that he has honed over the past decade since co-founding public art and placemaking company Cultural Capital. He shared what he believes creates a sense of community and home in a city. Mark looked back upon human history to show why public art and places with distinctive characters are so important to our wellbeing.

After Mark’s presentation, a spirited panel gathered on stage to further tease out some of these concepts. Panelists were Urbis/Future State Director Kate Meyrick, author of Killing Sydney: The Fight for a City's Soul Elizabeth Farrelly, award-winning Walbanga and Wadi Wadi creative and designer Alison Page, writer, educator, and Director of Nguluway DesignInc, Wiradjuri architect Craig Kerslake.

The panel discussed a wide range of issues, including:

  • What is the difference between ‘place’ and ‘Country’?

  • Should ‘place’ actually be called ‘Country’?

  • What is the role of government, developers and community in creating spaces that connect with stories of place and what needs to shift in order to create more spaces that respond the Country in which they sit?

  • How can the intangible cultural initiatives such as dance, events, happenings be encouraged through the design of spaces?
